<P>As expected, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jackson_michael/artist.jhtml">Michael Jackson</a>'s former doctor <a href="/news/articles/1673957/conrad-murray-appeal-verdict-michael-jackson.jhtml">Conrad Murray has filed an appeal</a> to challenge his involuntary manslaughter conviction. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:708788.id:1673923" width="240" height="211"></div><p> According to <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2011/12/02/conrad-murray-files-appeal-involuntary-manslaughter" target="_blank">TMZ</a>, Murray filed the petition in pro per, which means he has decided to forego hiring legal representation and represent himself. He reportedly listed "Men's Central Jail" and his booking number in the space on the appeal document where a lawyer would normally list a firm's name or contact information. TMZ also reported that although Murray seems to be without a lawyer, he is still in communication with Nareg Gourjian, one of the attorneys who represented him during his manslaughter trial. "This case presents a gold mine of issues for any appellate lawyer," Gourjian told TMZ. "Dr. Murray is confident that the Court of Appeal will vindicate him." Following the guilty verdict, Murray's lead defense lawyer Ed Chernoff told CNN, "What matters most right now is trying to keep Dr. Murray from taking up a prison cell in this community. That's what we're focusing on right now, and we'll deal with an appeal after that." <a href="/news/articles/1675062/conrad-murray-sentence.jhtml">Murray was sentenced to four years</a> in jail Tuesday, but due to overcrowding, he's unlikely to serve his full term. </p>

The pop singer created a special message T-shirt, featuring a purple zebra, that <a href="/news/articles/1653432/kehas-we-r-who-we-r-video-is-hot-and-dangerous.jhtml">proclaims "We R Who We R,"</a> the title of her hit anthem about individuality. The shirts sell for $35, with all proceeds supporting the HRC's work to achieve equality for the LGBT community. According to the <a href="http://www.hrc.org/press-releases/entry/human-rights-campaign-unveils-t-shirt-collaboration-with-kesha" target="_blank">HRC website</a>, only 1,000 shirts will be produced. Others are also using the day to bring awareness to LGBT issues. Several notable celebrities will be honored by the Equality Forum, which is hosting an event and profiling notable LGBT members in pop culture. Since launching the program five years ago, over 200 icons have been profiled, including Jane Lynch, Lady Gaga and Neil Patrick Harris. Lazin called LGBT month "empowering and life affirming." This week, “American Idol” kicked off its 11th season, and it appears even President Obama is getting into the spirit. On Thursday night at a fundraiser at the Apollo Theater, the commander in chief surprised a star-studded Harlem, New York, crowd by busting out a few measures of “AI” staple Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together.”
Obama’s smooth singing voice impressed many — including the Rev. Al Green himself, who told TMZ that Obama “nailed it” — but does the leader of the free world have what it takes to make it on America’s #1 singing competition?
“American Idol” associate music director and vocal coach Michael Orland certainly thinks so!
“I swear to you, if he auditioned for me in the big stadium [rounds], I would have put him through to the producers immediately,” Orland exclusively told MTV News. “I think he was really charming and had a great voice, and that’s all you can really tell in the a cappella rounds anyway. … I thought his phrasing was great, how he broke it up and really worked the room while he was doing it.
But even more noteworthy was Obama’s perfect pitch. “He was in the exact same key [as Al Green's recording]. To pull that out of the air, with everything perfectly in tune, I was really impressed,” Orland added.
The vocal pro even believes Obama’s voice was strong enough to win over ultimate deciders Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler. “I guarantee you he would have gotten a Golden Ticket.”
On his hypothetical “Idol” journey, Obama’s next challenge would be the dreaded Hollywood Week, where hundreds of hopefuls are forced to work around the clock, learning group numbers with little sleep and lots of drama. “I think considering the amount of stress he’s normally under, he’d do really well,” Orland laughed.
The “Idol” insider struggled to compare Obama’s singing voice to any previous contestants but, ultimately, that’s what makes the President a fantastic prospect.
“It sounded like him! He sang like he speaks. He has a unique voice which is all you ever try to find in somebody. … He didn’t try to copy anybody,” Orland raved.
Still, every singer could use a little constructive criticism — even singers who have the power to start nuclear war — and if Orland were working with Obama on a full-fledged “Idol” performance, he would encourage the President to take a few risks. “When you do one of those really well-known songs, don’t be afraid to change it up a little bit,” Orland said, jokingly adding, “If they could send Air Force One, I would give him a free coaching!”
Alas, Obama is too old to audition for “Idol” by 22 years, but fear not, Mr. President … there’s always season two of “The X Factor.”

<P>Just weeks after being sent to jail for <a href="/news/articles/1675062/conrad-murray-sentence.jhtml">four years</a> following a conviction on a felony involuntary manslaughter charge in the death of <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jackson_michael/artist.jhtml" target="_blank">Michael Jackson</a>, cardiologist Conrad Murray is throwing himself on the mercy of the court. The doctor had been slated to earn up to $150,000 a month to act as Jackson's personal physician before the pop icon's death in June 2009 from an overdose of the Murray-administered surgical anesthetic propofol. But on Tuesday <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/conrad_murray_in_shackles_asks/280479" target="_blank"><I>E! News</I></a> reported that Murray filed a <a href="/news/articles/1675343/conrad-murray-conviction-appeal.jhtml">notice of appeal</a> in Los Angeles Superior Court in which he claimed that he is "indigent and respectfully requests the appointment of counsel on appeal." Murray, 58, is planning to appeal both his conviction and his sentence, but has not yet filed papers with the California Appeals Court. He had hired two lawyers to handle his manslaughter case, but is now seeking attorneys with appeal experience. One of those former lawyers, J. Michael Flanagan, told E! that he was shocked at how his client is being treated in jail. "It is crazy and unbelievable how [the sheriffs] are treating" Murray in jail, said Flanagan, who claimed he waited over an hour to see Murray, who was brought out in handcuffs and leg chains. Flanagan was further shocked to see Murray handcuffed to the table for their meeting, something the lawyer said he'd never seen before in the case of a low-level, non-violent offender. Charles Peckham, who is handling civil cases against Murray, told the <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/doctor-convicted-in-michael-jacksons-death-seeking-court-paid-attorney-for-appeal/2011/12/13/gIQAHIYGsO_story.html" target="_blank"><I>Associated Press</I></a> that his client is under tight security and isolation that is more intense than other inmates at the Los Angeles Men's Central Jail. "Treating him like Hannibal Lecter is offensive," said Peckham. "This man who saved lives made a mistake, and they're going to [make] him pay like a mass-murderer." Sheriff's officials defended the tight security, saying it was for Murray's safety.</p>

Olympic hopeful had been in a coma since a skiing accident in Park City, Utah, last week.

Professional skier and Olympic hopeful Sarah Burke died Thursday (January 19) following an accident during a training run on the superpipe in Park City, Utah, on January 11; Burke had been in a coma since the crash. Burke’s publicist confirmed the news of her death to People magazine.
The freestyle skier’s death comes just one week after she underwent successful surgery to repair a torn vertebral artery that caused bleeding between her brain and skull. Despite the success of the procedure, Burke remained in a coma.
Hospital officials told the magazine that Burke suffered a ruptured artery, which caused her to go into cardiac arrest. She sustained irreversible damage to her brain due to lack of oxygen and blood and never regained consciousness.
According to a statement from her parents, sister and husband Rory Bushfield obtained by People, Burke died “peacefully surrounded by those she loved” and her organs and tissues were donated, per the skier’s wishes. The family also expressed their “heartfelt gratitude” in the statement, for the “international outpouring of support they have received from all the people Sarah touched.”
The 29-year-old Canadian was considered a pioneer in women’s free skiing, “The Godmother” of the sport according to the Ski Channel. She was an eight-time X-Games medalist and an Olympic hopeful for the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

"I don't know which one is going to come first. But I will believe the one that I saw is this outfit, and I can't really describe it, but it's going to have lights embedded in it. And then I saw another outfit and it's like a body outfit, one that you spray-paint on, and I don't know if it's a stars-and-stripes theme, but I saw that there were stars and stripes in the right areas." In addition to all the ups in her career, Gaga's personal life will also prosper, according to Bravo, which means that she may get even more serious with her rumored beau and "You and I" co-star, "Vampire Diaries" actor Taylor Kinney. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:722468.id:1676617" width="240" height="211"></div><p> "Her personal life is going to stay stable for a while. The reason why is that on the outside she shows she's a strong character — and for business she is — but on the inside she's a mush. And so as a result, she needs to have her relationship in place, especially right now when she needs that support on going on something that's so big," he said. "Two years is a long, long time [to tour]. I don't think that relationship is going … it's not going out." Just how serious might they get? Well, Gaga, believe it or not, is already pondering a family, according to Bravo. (Although she did note in a recent interview that the only family she is focused on is <a href="/news/articles/1676799/beyonce-baby-lady-gaga.jhtml">her new music</a>.) "I also feel this need of having children. So I don't know how this is going to play because we know she has a tour and she's not going to stop the tour short to have a child," Bravo predicted. "And I know that work is on her mind, but I know that [her spirit guide] Liberace is telling me about a child. And I know that in the back of her mind, she wants one. If you like your movies with a lot of action, kick-ass fight sequences and actors who do their own stunts, look no further than this week’s new thriller “Haywire” to satisfy those needs.
The concept for the film was born after director Steven Soderbergh saw footage of MMA fighter Gina Carano in the cage, which inspired the Oscar winner to build a film around her. “Haywire” revolves around a black-ops supersoldier (Carano) who seeks the ultimate revenge after she is betrayed by her colleagues, played by the very capable Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas and Michael Douglas.
MTV News recently caught up with Carano, Tatum and McGregor to discuss the very realistic fight sequences and how the guys were more than game for getting their butts kicked by a woman.
“The physicality, that was fun to me. I didn’t have to hurt anybody,” Carano said of the difference between the film’s choreographed fights versus her MMA matches. “I didn’t have to worry about getting choked out, and there were no egos with any of the actors. They all wanted to do all their own stunts, and a lot of people around me were like, ‘Gina, that’s not normal. You’ve got some beautiful people to work with and a beautiful first experience.’ ”
“To be totally honest, she’s better than every guy I’ve ever fought, really, other than one, and he was a strike force fighter as well,” Tatum admitted of his co-star, with whom he shares an intense bone-breaking exchange during the first five minutes of the film. “I can say this without any amount of trying to say it for the movie: I challenge anyone to come and fight her or even move with her. She’s by far the best athlete I’ve ever gotten a chance to move with. She’s so strong and in control, it’s just ridiculously unprecedented in my opinion.”
McGregor added that he didn’t even think about the man-vs.-woman factor, only that it was the most appropriate scenario for his manipulative, weasel-like character.
“There was a slight difference in our fight scene together. For me, I didn’t ever have any issue with the fact that I was having to do this fight scene with a woman, because I was the underdog,” he said. “There was no question that I was going to get killed if I didn’t manage to get away.”

Glam rocker tackled the legendary 1970 Led Zeppelin song for ‘American Idol’ rock night.

<P>Imagine a freight train speeding toward you at midnight. Or a rockslide barreling down a hill as you try to outrace it. That's the feeling of the ominous, chugging Jimmy Page riff that kicks off <MTVNLINK type="url" id="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/led_zeppelin/artist.jhtml">Led Zeppelin</MTVNLINK>'s 1970 Stonehenge of rock, "Whole Lotta Love." And that's before singer Robert Plant leans into one of the nastiest, ecstatic rock screams this side of the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again." That's the song Adam Lambert chose to sing on <a href="/news/articles/1610708/adam-allison-shine-on-idol-rock-night.jhtml">"American Idol" rock night</a> Tuesday (May 5), and, needless to say, it was a challenge that the eyeliner-loving Los Angeles stage veteran was more than up for, hitting a series of high notes and rock screams that would have made Plant proud. It was a risky maneuver that paid off for Lambert, who chose a tune that came in at #75 on <I>Rolling Stone</i> magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" in 2004. </p><div style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left;"> <embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtvmusic.com:84215" width="256" height="223" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashVars="dist=http://www.mtvmusic.com" allowFullScreen="true" AllowScriptAccess="always"></embed></div><p> The legendary British rock act recorded the tribute to Chicago blues icon Willie Dixon during their second U.S. tour after working it out in their live show, including it on their 1969 classic album <I>Led Zeppelin II.</i> Like many of the songs Zeppelin performed early in their career, "Love" was a blues standard turned on its head with a heavy dose of crunching psychedelic guitar and thundering drums, courtesy of late drummer John Bonham. The song was based on a 1962 tune by another blues forefather, Muddy Waters, called "You Need Love," which was penned by Dixon. For Zeppelin's version, Plant customized the lyrics by adding some lyrical quotes from a few other songs Dixon wrote for Howlin' Wolf, "Back Door Man" and "Shake For Me," nailing the tricky vocal in a single take. It was also inspired by 1966's "You Need Loving" from the British rock group the Small Faces, for whom Zeppelin had great affection, but they also did not credit Dixon for his part in writing the original lyrics. The song became Zeppelin's first U.S. single and their only U.S. top 10 hit. Though their manager would not let them release singles in the U.K. because he thought it cannibalized album sales, the song was finally released as the band's only British single in 1997. Dixon sued Zeppelin over the song in 1985, claiming it borrowed too heavily from his "You Need Love," and Zeppelin reached an agreement with him, with Dixon using the money he received to set up a program that provided musical instruments for schools. Well, over the weekend, the Biebs was <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/justin_biebers_hair_goes_dark_side/286863" target="_blank">spotted in Los Angeles</a> donning much darker hair than his trademark sandy blond. When Bieber cut off his hair last year, MTV News spoke to his <a href="/news/articles/1659195/justin-bieber-haircut.jhtml">hairstylist, Vanessa Price</a>, who told us about his new look, noting that it had a lot to do with Bieber's growing pains. "We knew it was going to be a big deal," Price explained. "We knew it was going to shock fans, but we also knew it was going to be a change in terms of growing up. I think that's something that people adjust to. "We'd been talking about it for a while and shared some ideas, but literally the day of he was adamant about the haircut. He amped himself up for it," Price continued, before describing his momentary hesitation. "The minute we started cutting, he was like, 'Wait, wait, wait.' He loves it. He's enjoying it." The new hair color coincides with his girlfriend Selena Gomez's hairstyle changes. She recently <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/selenagomez/status/157224232835760130" target="_blank">tweeted</a> a photo of herself sporting multi-colored highlights in her hair. Bieber's new look may be part of a makeover for his upcoming album, <i>Believe,</i> slated for release later this year. He confirmed last week that <a href="/news/articles/1677263/justin-bieber-will-i-am-believe.jhtml">Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am</a> will appear on the album. Not only does Bieber want to <a href="/news/articles/1675015/justin-bieber-new-album.jhtml">grow up</a> when it comes to his look but also when it comes to his music. "The only conversation we've had about Justin's album that we're about to do is it's really important that it's the proper transition, because we've seen him [with] 'Baby,' now we're watching him grow up," Bieber's longtime vocal producer Kuk Harrell told MTV News in November. "And we can't just throw him into the adult game right away. It has to be the proper transition."</p>

Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation will launch February 29 with a fete at Harvard University, the singer and her mother and co-founder, Cynthia Germanotta, announced in a statement on Thursday (January 19). BTWF was created to promote youth empowerment and equality by encouraging self-confidence and well-being and bringing bullying to an end.
Joining the pop star at Sanders Theatre will be her partners in the endeavor: Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society, the MacArthur Foundation and the California Endowment.
Gaga has long been a staunch supporter of anti-bullying legislation, reportedly meeting with President Obama to discuss the topic in September and visiting the White House in early December to discuss the issue with administration officials. She dedicated her performance of “Hair” at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas to Jamey Rodemeyer, a 14-year-old fan who took his own life after years of anti-gay harassment. And last year, Gaga topped DoSomething.org’s list of the most charitable celebrities, in part for her work on behalf of gay rights causes.
“My daughter’s foundation was born out of her passion to create a better world where people are kinder and nicer to one another and are accepted for who they are, regardless of how different they may be,” Germanotta said. “She has experienced many of the struggles that our youth encounter today, and identifies with the lasting effects they can have without proper support. Together, we look forward to creating a new movement that will engage and empower youth and accept them as valuable members of our society.”
The Mother Monster’s commitment to the gay community was again recognized Thursday (January 19) with a nomination for Outstanding Music Artist at the GLAAD Media Awards.The awards recognize fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBT community across all media. In December, the diva was recognized with the Hero Award by the Trevor Project, a nonprofit organization that offers suicide-prevention services to LGBT youth.
During her acceptance speech at Trevor Project Live, Gaga touched on her wishes to someday make bullying a hate crime. “I hope that we can acknowledge all together that where this needs to begin is in the schools,” Gaga said. “I want my fans and people all over the world to know that there’s always somebody that’s listening. But I want them to know they’re listening before it gets too late.”

<P>At Tuesday's (November 29) sentencing hearing for Dr. Conrad Murray — where Michael Jackson's former personal physician received <a href="/news/articles/1675062/conrad-murray-sentence.jhtml">four years in jail for involuntary manslaughter</a> — a statement from Jackson's parents was read in court. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:708788.id:1673923" width="240" height="211"></div><p> "We still look at each other in disbelief: Is it really possible he is gone? It is simply against the natural order of things," Joe and Katherine Jackson said in the statement, read by Jackson family attorney Brian Panish. "We are not here to seek revenge. There is nothing you can do here today that will bring Michael back." <a href="http://www.facebook.com/mtvnews/posts/199210760161755" target="_blank"><b>Do you think Conrad Murray deserved the maximum sentence? Let us know on Facebook.</b></a> Along with Katherine, Michael's siblings LaToya, Jermaine, Randy and Rebbie were also reportedly in attendance at the hearing. In regards to the sentence, the family said in the statement: "We respectfully request you impose a sentence that reminds physicians they cannot sell their services to the highest bidder." The judge agreed, lamenting that due to a new California law to address overcrowding in prisons, he was unable to sentence Murray to state prison. Stating that Murray practiced "horrible medicine" and had "absolutely no remorse," Judge Michael Pastor declined the defense's motion for probation and handed down the stiffest sentence possible — four years — which Murray will most likely serve in a Los Angeles county jail or on home confinement. Upon leaving the courthouse, Michael's brother Jermaine, when asked if the four-year sentence was enough, shook his head and said, "No." Katherine told local TV station KTLA, "Four years is not enough for someone's life. It won't bring him back. But at least he got the maximum, and I thought the judge was very, very fair."</p>

Uh oh looks like ex-loves Heather Locklear and Jack Wagner could be in some hot water! An argument involving the couple could find each of them facing criminal charges, for real. The latest drama to involve the former Melrose Place love birds is a fight that occurred between them last December. According to the LAPD there is now a file on the two and they must meet with the City Attorney’s Office for a hearing. The upcoming World War II drama “Red Tails” tells many stories. First and foremost, it’s the story of the heroic Tuskegee Airmen, the country’s first African American air regimen. Within that story are tales of social injustice and a historical wartime drama. It’s also a big-budget action movie produced by George Lucas.
With so much to accomplish, “Red Tails” has a lot on its plate dramatically speaking. One of the stars of the film, Cuba Gooding Jr., told MTV News recently that the film manages to find the right balance.
“I think it strikes it in the subject matter,” Gooding said. “It didn’t hurt that George Lucas spent the last quarter of a decade trying to get this story onto the big screen.
“The fact that you have the story of these warriors, whose story has been suppressed up until this date — except for smaller instances — are finally getting their due, educating the audience of what African Americans did in the war effort in World War II … told by George Lucas, ‘Star Wars,’ ” Gooding said. “You’re going to see an amusement park ride.”
Gooding concluded that all of those elements came together for a proper telling of the story. “I think that’s how you get the balance,” he added. “You get a filmmaker who is so passionate he’s putting his own dough up to the tune of $100 million-plus. You see it on the screen.”
Gooding’s co-star, Nate Parker, tried to chime in with a comment of his own, but the Academy Award-winning actor stopped Parker jokingly. “No, no, no, no. That was enough,” Gooding said. “I’m just kidding. Speak your mind, brother.”
For Parker, the answer to the film’s success is simple. “Risk and reward,” he said. “He took a risk, and now I think he’s being rewarded in a major way because I think the film is fantastic.”

<P><a href="/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a>, <a href="/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> and George Clooney better have received something nice from Santa this year, because they certainly weren't on his naughty list. Those three toplined <a href="http://www.dosomething.org" target="_blank">DoSomething.org</a>'s Top 20 Celebs Gone Good, the organization's annual roundup of the most charity-friendly stars in the business. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:712657" width="240" height="211"></div><p> This is Gaga's second year in a row at the #1 spot. In 2011 she dedicated much of her time to putting an end to bullying and even started a new charitable organization called <a href="http://www.mtv.co.uk/news/lady-gaga/336330-lady-gaga-born-this-way-foundation-charity" target="_blank">Born This Way</a>. The "Marry the Night" singer did plenty more to help out those less fortunate in 2011, including <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2011/12/12/lady-gaga-nude-sketch-tony-bennett-auction-charity">auctioning off a nude sketch for charity</a> and performing at the <a href="/news/articles/1670610/lady-gaga-bono-bill-clinton-charity-foundation.jhtml">Bill Clinton Foundation fundraiser</a>. However, this was really Bieber's year to shine. He rocketed up DoSomething.org's list from #10 last year to #2 this year. It helps that Bieber donated some of his profits from his Christmas album, <i>Under the Mistletoe</i>, and his self-named perfume to various charitable organizations. Bieber also kept up his work with Pencils of Promise, a group that has built 41 schools in Laos, Nicaragua and Guatemala and was founded by his manager's brother. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:683376" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Rounding out the top five were Will and Jada Pinkett Smith and Leonardo DiCaprio. This was a year for celeb power couples, with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie clocking at #8, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore at #12 and newlyweds Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert at #14. ‘He always wants there to be the soul in there,’ Cruz tells MTV News about his ‘Without You’ collaborator.

Set to work with fellow hitmaker <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/cruz__taio/artist.jhtml">Taio Cruz</a>, the two already cooked up some magic with their <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/guetta_david/artist.jhtml">David Guetta</a> anthem <a href="/news/articles/1670301/usher-david-guetta-without-you.jhtml">"Without You,"</a> and it seems they are hoping to recapture that spirit for Usher's follow-up to 2010's <i>Raymond v. Raymond</i>. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:717257" width="240" height="211"></div><p> "I saw Usher a few times, but I spoke to him at length at David [Guetta]'s house when we were in Ibiza [Spain]," he told MTV News in L.A. after his Jingle Ball set. "He has very specific ideas of where he wants to go musically and sound-wise." Given that Usher has never shied away from exposing a bit of himself in his music, while also keeping the party going, Cruz wants to make sure they can connect the mind, body and soul for this next release. "He always wants there to be the soul in there," he explained. "I'm kind of, not the opposite, but I'm always like, 'Let's get straight to the point and be really clear with the message and be simple.' "So we try to match those two worlds together: being soulful and, at the same time, catchy," he added. Cruz can't yet discuss what they're working on: Besides "Without You," he said, "Everything else is secret." Usher said he was drawn to the <a href="/news/articles/1674782/usher-david-guetta-without-you.jhtml">Guetta hit</a> because he connected to it emotionally, explaining to MTV News recently what an important part that plays in his musical philosophy. "I think the world wanted a record like that. That [song] really spoke to the journey that I've actually been on in the last three years," he said. "Traveling all around the world, music sounds different. Actor talks to MTV News about role as a cop ‘battling for his life in the ultimate extreme.’

When walking into a theater to see a movie called “Man on a Ledge,” you might assume there isn’t a whole lot of mystery to what the film will be about. But it has to get more complicated from there, right? To find out, MTV News’ Josh Horowitz visited the New York City set and talked to the stars themselves.
“The movie is called ‘Man on a Ledge.’ It’s about a guy on a ledge,” said Anthony Mackie, one of the stars of the film.
Mackie’s co-star Elizabeth Banks expanded on the plot and revealed more of the mystery. “Really, everything’s in the title,” she said. “It’s about a man on a ledge, and the people around him who are trying to figure out why he’s on the ledge, and how to get him off the ledge before he falls off and dies.”
During the visit, Horowitz sat on the ledge to speak with the man himself, Sam Worthington.
Worthington explained that obviously there’s more to the movie than the man and his ledge. What makes it worth watching is the story behind the man: A good cop was framed and wrongfully sent to prison, and after a thrilling escape, he takes to the ledge in order to prove his innocence once and for all. “This is his retrial,” Worthington said.
“Good action really comes down to the stakes, what’s at stake, whether it’s rescuing the girl, getting the diamonds or whatever,” Worthington said. “He’s battling for his life in the ultimate extreme, just on a ledge. He’s on the edge on the ledge. Because the stakes are so high, I think that’s why we can label it a thriller, an action thriller.”
But even with high stakes, a movie taking place primarily on the side of a building has a limited amount of space to move within. Banks said that even though Worthington’s character is more or less stuck, there’s still a lot of movement. “He moves around, though, on the ledge, and I think also he’s constantly in danger. We’re really trying to keep him alive, even though he doesn’t want to jump,” Banks said. “There is always a danger that you could slip and fall. You have to unravel an entire scenario that’s happening.”
The scenario Banks referred to is the heist going on across the street, the whole reason behind the man on the ledge and his desperate attempt to clear his name.
For Worthington, “Man on a Ledge” has provided challenges as an actor he doesn’t face every day. “This one’s been different because I’ve been having to talk. I’m having to act for the first time probably ever,” he said.
That might not be what you expect from a movie with such a simple title, but Worthington learned from Mackie that acting is exactly what the movie requires. “Mackie’s done these kinds of movies, and he said to me, ‘Our job is to ground the action,’ ” he said. “That’s always what I’ve been trying to do. If we can get away with it on this one, it’s not just a gimmick movie then.”

<P><b>LOS ANGELES</b> — During the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, <a href="/music/artist/jackson_michael/artist.jhtml">Michael Jackson</a>'s fans have been as much a fixture at the courthouse as the <a href="/news/articles/1675068/conrad-murray-sentencing.jhtml">Jackson family</a>. When <a href="/news/articles/1675062/conrad-murray-sentence.jhtml">Murray was sentenced to four years</a> in jail Tuesday (November 29), MTV News spoke with those loyal fans outside the court to see if the maximum sentence was an apt punishment. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:715142.id:1673923" width="240" height="211"></div><p> "Four years — not enough, but at least something," said one fan, sporting a red jacket in tribute to MJ. "And where I come from, a little something is always better than nothing." One pair of friends might have been wearing matching <i>Thriller</i> T-shirts, but their opinions on Murray's sentence certainly didn't match. "If four years is the maximum and he got the maximum — I know she's not happy, but I'm happy," one of the women said, gesturing to her less-than-pleased companion. "I feel like justice was served and that L.A. can now be proud and stand tall." "It's better than nothing, but it's not even close to justice," said another fan, wearing Jackson's trademark fedora and sequined glove. "Not only was [Murray] negligent; he let the man die. It's unconscionable. He didn't even try. How would a heart doctor not know how to give CPR? It's insane." The cardiologist, who was found guilty of one felony count of involuntary manslaughter November 7, was facing up to four years in state prison in the death of the pop icon, but due to recent changes to alleviate overcrowding in California prisons, the judge in the case said he was unable to send the doctor to state prison for his crime. On top of that, <a href="/news/articles/1675080/conrad-murray-sentence-four-years-experts.jhtml">legal expert Mike Cavalluzzi told MTV News</a> that Murray will likely serve less than half of his four-year sentence. Those legal loopholes concerned a female fan outside the courthouse, but she was also happy that the maximum punishment was doled out. "The only thing I'm worried about now, with the overcrowding of the jails, he might get one year and house arrest," she told MTV News. "I'm just hoping it'll be four years, that's what I'm praying. I'm just glad that justice has been served today, and I'm glad justice can be served to the family and to the fans, and everybody around today will be happy and celebrate that justice has been served. And I'm sure Michael's looking from heaven right now."</p>

The twosome revealed they were in the family way at the VMAs back in August. Jessica Simpson and her fiancé, Eric Johnson, will also welcome their first little bundle of joy. The news of the pregnancy came after a lot of speculation about <a href="/news/articles/1673485/jessica-simpson-pregnant.jhtml">Simpson's expanding midsection</a>. <P>On October 14, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/borgir_dimmu/artist.jhtml">Dimmu Borgir</a>Dimmu Borgir — who just happen to be <a href="/news/articles/1593780/demi-lovato-metalhead-metal-file.jhtml">Demi Lovato's favorite black-metal band</a> — will release a a three-disc DVD/CD set called "The Invaluable Darkness," the band's first visual offering since 2002's "World Misanthropy." Boasting live footage shot last year, during gigs in Norway, Germany and England, "The Invaluable Darkness" demonstrates the unbridled furor of seeing Dimmu live, guitarist Silenoz said. "It shows the honest rawness and atmospheric darkness of our concerts," the Norwegian told <i>Metal File</i> last week, after <a href="/news/articles/1596201/in-this-moment-make-the-dream-a-reality-metal-file.jhtml">dismissing recent online rumors that his band's next LP would be coming out through Roadrunner Records</a>. "Basically, it shows the intense live side of the band, as opposed to the perfection and the cleanness of how we sound on our albums. It's just a different side to the band, basically." Dimmu Borgir began thinking about "The Invaluable Darkness" two years ago, but didn't start capturing footage until last summer, Silenoz explained, adding that the band will use its current stint on the Blackest of the Black Tour — which got underway Thursday night in Miami Beach, Florida, and also features the tour's founder, Danzig, along with <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/moonspell/artist.jhtml">Moonspell</a>Moonspell, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/winds_of_plague/artist.jhtml">Winds of Plague</a>Winds of Plague and Skeletonwitch — to promote the DVD. Dimmu Borgir will not, however, use the tour to write material for their next LP. "It's our first time on Blackest, but Glenn [Danzig] had wanted to bring us out before [on the tour], but we weren't available until now," Silenoz said. "We've done Ozzfest before, but we're looking forward to this tour more. We did the main stage on Ozzfest, playing in f–_ing broad daylight. This tour will let us play in bigger places, but at the same time showcase more of what the band's about, visually. We are going to concentrate on the tour for now. Some years ago, we tried putting [material] together on the road, but once we got home, we listened back to it, and were like, 'What the f— <i>is</i> this?' So, we just scrapped it all. We find it's so much better to totally focus on one thing at a time, and then, when that's over, you move on to the next [thing]. We don't really feel like we need to rush things, anyway, so we'll just take our time, and it's going to be what it's going to be." Dimmu Borgir hope to reconvene in late December to begin writing the follow-up to 2007's diabolically titled <i>In Sorte Diaboli.</i> "We have some ideas floating around already, but we haven't arranged any material yet," he said. "We'll start doing that once the touring for this DVD is over." The band's frontman, Shagrath, is also due to marry soon — he's engaged to actor Nicolas Cage's ex-girlfriend, Christina Fulton, so that may have an effect on when Dimmu finish their next album, which Silenoz said could be out this coming spring. "I'm sure [Shagrath] won't let anything get in the way [of] the band — I think, I hope," the guitarist said. "We don't need a Yoko [Ono] situation." While Dimmu have been at it going on 15 years now, Silenoz said he doesn't think their forthcoming material will be much of a departure from their previous black-metal offerings. "And we have always been about more than just that term, 'black metal,' " he said. "Luckily for us, the older you get, the less concerned you get with the categorization and putting labels on your music. Things start getting more and more limitless with us, and we know that we operate within certain frames. But we try not to analyze things too much, because it's just going to be working against you in the end. When we write new stuff, we don't think about what we should write — we just get together, and put material together, and if we like it, we keep it. That's the formula, if we even have a formula." Dimmu Borgir are definitely getting older — guitarist Galder will be missing Blackest because of a recent addition to his family, and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/susperia/artist.jhtml">Susperia's</a>Susperia's Cyrus will be filling in for him; while former <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/vader/artist.jhtml">Vader</a>Vader drummer Dariusz Brzozowski takes over for Hellhammer, who had to leave the band in 2007 after sustaining a neck injury that's now limited the use of his right arm. As Dimmu has gotten on in years, Silenoz admits they have failed to keep pace with some of the more extreme black-metal acts that have followed in their wake. "We helped open doors for the more extreme bands out there," Silenoz said. "I'm sure we helped open doors for bands like Watain, [insomuch as] people that had maybe started listening to us first then went on to the more extreme stuff. Let's face it — we're not as extreme as Watain and other bands like that, but we're fine with that." The Blackest of the Black Tour continues through November 10 in San Francisco. The rest of the week's metal news: Dimmu's tourmates on Blackest, <b>Winds of Plague</b>, have announced ex-<b>Azusa</b> drummer <b>Art Cruz</b> has joined their ranks — he replaced <b>Jeff Tenney</b>. It's been two years since 'Cris dropped his last album, <i>Battle of the Sexes,</i> and the Atlanta MC estimates that his next one will hit stores this spring. "I get the beats together and I put out my ideas, so I'd say we're maybe about 40 percent done," the rapper told <a href="http://www.billboard.com/column/the-juice/ludacris-eyes-spring-ludaversal-release-1005831952.story#/column/the-juice/ludacris-eyes-spring-ludaversal-release-1005831952.story" target="_blank"><i>Billboard</i></a> of his upcoming eighth LP, <i>Ludaversal,</i> which he anticipates will be out around May with a first single dropping in March. Luda, who dropped his <a href="/news/articles/1674369/ludacris-1.21-gigawatts-mixtape.jhtml"><i>1.21 Gigawatts</i> mixtape</a> in November, also revealed one big-time guest on the LP. "<a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher</a> is one person that I've already worked with," he said. As far as what the two have cooked up for <i>Ludaversal,</i> fans will just have to wait and see. Throughout his career, Luda has shown a ton of versatility. An undeniable hitmaker, at times the nimble-tongued lyricist has been comical (2001's "Area Codes" and 2004's "Number One Spot") and in other instances delivered healthy amounts of substance (2006's "Runaway Love" and 2008's "Do the Right Thing"). For <i>Ludaversal,</i> he will get a little personal. "It's been a minute since I've been away from music, and there is just so much to talk about," he said. Conrad Murray asks judge for a court-appointed attorney to appeal his involuntary manslaughter conviction.

<P>Just weeks after being sent to jail for <a href="/news/articles/1675062/conrad-murray-sentence.jhtml">four years</a> following a conviction on a felony involuntary manslaughter charge in the death of <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jackson_michael/artist.jhtml" target="_blank">Michael Jackson</a>, cardiologist Conrad Murray is throwing himself on the mercy of the court. The doctor had been slated to earn up to $150,000 a month to act as Jackson's personal physician before the pop icon's death in June 2009 from an overdose of the Murray-administered surgical anesthetic propofol. But on Tuesday <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/conrad_murray_in_shackles_asks/280479" target="_blank"><I>E! News</I></a> reported that Murray filed a <a href="/news/articles/1675343/conrad-murray-conviction-appeal.jhtml">notice of appeal</a> in Los Angeles Superior Court in which he claimed that he is "indigent and respectfully requests the appointment of counsel on appeal." Murray, 58, is planning to appeal both his conviction and his sentence, but has not yet filed papers with the California Appeals Court. He had hired two lawyers to handle his manslaughter case, but is now seeking attorneys with appeal experience. One of those former lawyers, J. Michael Flanagan, told E! that he was shocked at how his client is being treated in jail. "It is crazy and unbelievable how [the sheriffs] are treating" Murray in jail, said Flanagan, who claimed he waited over an hour to see Murray, who was brought out in handcuffs and leg chains. Flanagan was further shocked to see Murray handcuffed to the table for their meeting, something the lawyer said he'd never seen before in the case of a low-level, non-violent offender. Charles Peckham, who is handling civil cases against Murray, told the <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/doctor-convicted-in-michael-jacksons-death-seeking-court-paid-attorney-for-appeal/2011/12/13/gIQAHIYGsO_story.html" target="_blank"><I>Associated Press</I></a> that his client is under tight security and isolation that is more intense than other inmates at the Los Angeles Men's Central Jail. "Treating him like Hannibal Lecter is offensive," said Peckham. "This man who saved lives made a mistake, and they're going to [make] him pay like a mass-murderer." Sheriff's officials defended the tight security, saying it was for Murray's safety.</p>

On Sunday, I covered my fourth (fifth? It’s all getting a bit fuzzy in my mid-30s) Golden Globes, and let me tell you, it was wild! I laughed with George Clooney, bro’d out with Michael Fassbender, ogled Michelle Williams’ trophy up close, and capped the night off with Diddy and Lindsay Lohan. I also was in bed eating a piece of cheesecake from room service before midnight. All of these things are true. Such is the bizarre event the Hollywood Foreign Press puts on every year. You’re a sketchy odd bunch, but you throw a hell of a party, guys! Thanks for the memories.
I’ve been lucky enough to cover the Oscars and the entire awards-show circuit the past few years at MTV News, and it is a fantastically glamorous and surreal bubble filled with moments that bend the mind (it’s like “Inception” if everyone were pretty. Huh?). It’s also a job — meaning it’s filled with massive frustrations and insults, just as anyone experiences in their 9 to 5. Unfortunately for me, when I start whining about “Glee” star Cory Monteith racing by me at a party, ignoring my request for an interview, most people want to punch me in the face. I get it. I really do. But I can be as miserable as the next person (actually, I think I can be more miserable than the next person), and no one is going to take away my right to bitch about a pushy publicist who gives me an earful about her client I’d be a fool not to talk to. Nobody!
I couldn’t bring you all with me to the Globes, unfortunately. Well, come on, where would I have put you? Really, be sensible! But I can give you a peek into some illuminating/ absurd/ just plain odd moments I experiences in my strange gig.
George Clooney and I are best friends!
George Clooney and I are not best friends. George Clooney doesn’t know my name. George Clooney is not inviting me to Lake Como. My wife and I are not going on a double date with him and his Amazonian girlfriend (seriously, was she in Avatar?). But George Clooney sure is good at seeming like you’re his best friend.
I interviewed George a couple days ago at the Critics’ Choice red carpet (most notable for me calling him old and him taking my microphone away). And a few days before that, we talked to him in New York at the National Board of Review red carpet (’tis the season). When the Cloonster (I can call him that: We have an understanding) saw me Sunday night, moments before his Best Actor win, he said he was relieved I was wearing a tie tonight but I still need to do something about the scruff. Dreamy, right? BFFs!
Actually, he’d combined me in his memory with a fellow MTV News-er, whom he’d talked to at the NBR in New York without the tie. It’s all good, George. You have a lot on your plate. See you at the Oscars.
The night belonged to Fassbender’s member
That doesn’t rhyme does it? I’m waiting for my flight home to New York (Al Roker is here!) and it will just have to do. Though Michael Fassbender didn’t win a prize for “Shame” Sunday night (see previous item on the Cloonster), he was a big topic in my red carpet interviews. Before I get to the silly stuff, let me just echo many by saying he delivers an awesome performance in “Shame” that should not be missed. Not good for a date night though. You’ve been warned.
Anyway, Fassbender is an all-around cool guy in my experience. Exhibit A: When I sprung an impromptu After Hours on him a month ago wherein he had the task of identifying celebrities based solely on photos of their penises (he did really well!). Last night, he told me friends have been giving him grief for being a “penis expert.” Later in the night, Fassbender’s genitalia came up (so to speak) in my conversations with Ewan McGregor (of course) and Paris Hilton (er, also of course?). Let it be known that Paris has not seen “Shame” yet but seemed quite excited when I told her what she was in for.
Lindsay Lohan and Diddy have odd ideas about interviews
Where would one run into the likes of Ewan McGregor and the star of “The Hottie and the Nottie”? (I tease: Paris actually couldn’t have been sweeter). Why the Weinstein afterparty! Also Meryl Streep and Kim Kardashian. America really is a melting pot! The Weinstein party (er, the carpet heading into it — I never went in) was a festive one and why not? Harvey’s flicks dominated.
Uggie, the dog from “The Artist,” seemed thrilled to be there. As did the whole gang from “My Week with Marilyn,” celebrating Michelle Williams’ win. But it was the random folks that were most fun to talk to. Why look, it’s Chris Tucker! Say, it’s a real housewife! And then there was Diddy swaggering as only he can down the carpet. I practically threw myself in his path so we could talk. He stopped, but he didn’t exactly talk. Instead he had his “spokesman” (Swizz Beatz by his side) answer all my questions. Whatever works, Diddy.
And then there was the last interview of the night. Truth be told, it wasn’t much of an interview. Just as we were packing up our troubles, there she was: the one, the only, Lindsay Lohan. “This is it!” I screamed to no one in particular. Lindsay raced by, only to reconsider. I was going to get something good. Cloonster was but an amuse-bouche. This is what it was all about. Tears would be shed. Confessions made. That weird stripper movie of hers would be dissected. “So, I hear you’re playing Elizabeth Taylor soon?” I began. She smiled and grabbed my arm. And without a word, she was gone. Thank you, Hollywood Foreign Press. Thank you.

Those three toplined <a href="http://www.dosomething.org" target="_blank">DoSomething.org</a>'s Top 20 Celebs Gone Good, the organization's annual roundup of the most charity-friendly stars in the business. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:712657" width="240" height="211"></div><p> This is Gaga's second year in a row at the #1 spot. In 2011 she dedicated much of her time to putting an end to bullying and even started a new charitable organization called <a href="http://www.mtv.co.uk/news/lady-gaga/336330-lady-gaga-born-this-way-foundation-charity" target="_blank">Born This Way</a>. The "Marry the Night" singer did plenty more to help out those less fortunate in 2011, including <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2011/12/12/lady-gaga-nude-sketch-tony-bennett-auction-charity">auctioning off a nude sketch for charity</a> and performing at the <a href="/news/articles/1670610/lady-gaga-bono-bill-clinton-charity-foundation.jhtml">Bill Clinton Foundation fundraiser</a>. However, this was really Bieber's year to shine. He rocketed up DoSomething.org's list from #10 last year to #2 this year. It helps that Bieber donated some of his profits from his Christmas album, <i>Under the Mistletoe</i>, and his self-named perfume to various charitable organizations. Bieber also kept up his work with Pencils of Promise, a group that has built 41 schools in Laos, Nicaragua and Guatemala and was founded by his manager's brother. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:683376" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Rounding out the top five were Will and Jada Pinkett Smith and Leonardo DiCaprio. This was a year for celeb power couples, with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie clocking at #8, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore at #12 and newlyweds Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert at #14. Mireille Enos can’t seem to stay away from controversy these days. Two of her biggest projects, AMC’s “The Killing” and this year’s “World War Z” have recently come under heavy scrutiny from fans, but at Sunday’s Golden Globes, Enos assured MTV News that both projects are headed in the right direction.
Fans of Max Brooks’ novel recently lashed out when word came down from the set of “World War Z” that significant changes had been made to the overall structure of the story. In what may be a relief to fans, Enos admitted that liberties were taken but said that the core remains the same.
“I definitely found the book very important, just to get into the mind of Max Brooks and the kind of story that he was trying to tell,” she told MTV News’ Josh Horowitz. “Actually, the book is about human nature in the midst of crisis. Even though the context is different in the film, that’s still the heart of it, and I’m so glad that was carried over.”
She also expanded on the part she plays, as well as Brad Pitt‘s role, and how those characters factor into the changes made to the story. “The book is narrated by a character who is now in the film, and I play that character’s wife,” she said.
When “The Killing” season finale aired last June, fans cried foul that the show ended without revealing Rosie Larsen’s killer. Enos told us on Sunday that she couldn’t understand the outrage. “I was so baffled, actually, by people not liking the ending. A cliffhanger is such a classic writing device,” she said. “If you’re enjoying the journey, why not want more?”
For season two, however, Enos promised a quicker show with much higher stakes. “The pace accelerates. The stakes jump by tenfold. Everything gets more and more personal, and the writing is so exceptional,” she said. “We shot the first three episodes, and our eyes are like this [makes bulging eye motion] at the end of every episode. It’s really going to be awesome.”

Indeed, the actress appeared yesterday on a local news show alongside Josh Hutcherson, her co-star in the film and, yes, her ex-boyfriend. Only no one told the anchors this relationship was over, leading to an awkward exchange.
“How long have you two been going out?” one asked, as Josh and Vanessa stared blankly at each other before handling the situation very, very well.
“We’re not,” Hutcherson said. “We were at one point, but she broke my heart… no, I’m just kidding.”

On Tuesday (January 17) Nick Cannon returned to the office for his first day back to work after being hospitalized for kidney failure two weeks ago. After an initial diagnosis of kidney stones, doctors determined that Cannon’s kidneys were beginning to fail thanks to an overdose of protein, medication he was taking and a lack of proper sustenance. Sitting at his desk, Cannon told MTV News that his road to recovery includes a new diet, which forces him to cut back on some of his favorite eats.
“I’m feeling good, I’m in the office, I’m grinding, the only thing that sucks is that I’m on the renal diet,” Cannon said. “It’s all about healthy living and fueling your system, but I don’t get to eat the things that I like to eat. You’ve got to stay hydrated and [eat] fruits and vegetables for breakfast.”
After admitting that a more typical breakfast would usually include Lucky Charms cereal (“I can’t have none of that stuff anymore”), Cannon explained that simple foods like oats are now on the menu.
“Not even the good oatmeal,” Cannon said. “Real oats, like horse-feed stuff — but it’s cool. I’ve got to start to love it.”
According to Cannon, the diet will be implemented in phases, and as his body slowly recovers, he’ll be able to incorporate Lucky Charms and other banned foods into his regimen once again.
“Right now I’m still on the strict diet and I can’t have any sodium, but as a couple of weeks go by and everything gets leveled out, then I can start having low sodium,” he said, revealing that hot sauce has been his solution for adding spice to his diet. “I can still have Tabasco sauce, so I’m excited about that because I love hot sauce. I’ll be putting Tabasco sauce on carrots, like, ‘This tastes delicious!’ ”
Dietary restrictions aside, the entertainment mogul and father of two is also reassessing his approach to healthy living. His hesitation to visit doctors, for example, is out the door. “I feel 100 percent right now, but obviously the doctors tell you to take it slow,” he said. “This is definitely the first time anything like this has ever happened to me. I’ve always thought that I was doing the right things, but that’s why I now encourage everybody to get checkups, get physicals, know what’s going on in your system and don’t play around with your body.
“I always considered myself as someone who was in great shape, but I was doing too much [to my body] so my immune system got confused and just started attacking my kidneys,” he continued. “You look at my Twitter picture and I look like I’m in shape, but I was putting the wrong stuff into my body, speeding all the time, not sleeping and eating properly — it’s all about taking time and really caring about yourself and how you fuel yourself.”

I liked her rawness and there was something fresh about there and ballsy, and when she spoke to the audience, she sounded like she had a similar sense of humor to me, quite ironic, and I liked her. So I do think she is very talented." That was really the end of the subject during their chat, other than when Madonna teased the British talk-show host about naming his dog after her. However, when he said his other dog was named Bailey, she quipped, "Not Gaga?" Some of that sentiment was mirrored in Madge's ABC interview, the rest of which airs on Friday's night's <i>20/20</i>. While she did call Gaga's "Born This Way" song "reductive" when asked about comparisons to her own "Express Yourself," she went on to say that she sees a lot of her own work in Gaga's. "I certainly think she references me a lot in her work. And sometimes I think it's amusing and flattering and well-done," she said, later adding that she thinks Gaga is "a very talented artist" and that she's making a "statement about taking something that was in the zeitgeist, you know, 20 years ago and turning it inside out and reinterpreting it." I went to the premiere on Tuesday and it was the coolest thing ever. First, the movie is AMAZING and Chris Evans is a superstar. Second, there were so many damn people there it was insane. I have been to movie premieres in New York before and they were nothing like this. I mean, they closed down Hollywood Boulevard. "A silk charmeuse blanket retails for $450, and it's a favorite gift. Gwyneth Paltrow has given this as baby gifts and it's a favorite among celebrities." ‘It didn’t hurt that George Lucas spent the last quarter of a decade trying to get this story’ made, actor tells MTV News.

The upcoming World War II drama “Red Tails” tells many stories. First and foremost, it’s the story of the heroic Tuskegee Airmen, the country’s first African American air regimen. Within that story are tales of social injustice and a historical wartime drama. It’s also a big-budget action movie produced by George Lucas.
With so much to accomplish, “Red Tails” has a lot on its plate dramatically speaking. One of the stars of the film, Cuba Gooding Jr., told MTV News recently that the film manages to find the right balance.
“I think it strikes it in the subject matter,” Gooding said. “It didn’t hurt that George Lucas spent the last quarter of a decade trying to get this story onto the big screen.
“The fact that you have the story of these warriors, whose story has been suppressed up until this date — except for smaller instances — are finally getting their due, educating the audience of what African Americans did in the war effort in World War II … told by George Lucas, ‘Star Wars,’ ” Gooding said. “You’re going to see an amusement park ride.”
Gooding concluded that all of those elements came together for a proper telling of the story. “I think that’s how you get the balance,” he added. “You get a filmmaker who is so passionate he’s putting his own dough up to the tune of $100 million-plus. You see it on the screen.”
Gooding’s co-star, Nate Parker, tried to chime in with a comment of his own, but the Academy Award-winning actor stopped Parker jokingly. “No, no, no, no. That was enough,” Gooding said. “I’m just kidding. Speak your mind, brother.”
For Parker, the answer to the film’s success is simple. “Risk and reward,” he said. “He took a risk, and now I think he’s being rewarded in a major way because I think the film is fantastic.”
